What are grub screws and what are they used for?
Grub screws are also known as setscrews. These special screws without heads are threaded along the full length. They are used to lock or clamp components while leaving the screw hidden.
The headless screws come with various drive types for screwing in, e.g. hex sockets. This enables easy fitting of the grub screws.
The versatile utilisation makes grub screws an important element in industry. They are used primarily in machine construction, electronics and the automotive industry. These standard parts help to secure components there.
The product range: Grub screws from norelem for every application
The norelem product range offers a diverse selection of grub screws and supplementary components. These offer a tailor-made solution for almost every application. These high-quality products meet even the most demanding requirements in industry and trade.
In addition to classic grub screws, our range also includes specialised products such as threaded spindles, thrust spindles, thrust pads and swivel pads. These components significantly expand the range of possible applications and open additional flexibility in design and assembly.
Regardless of whether you need to reliably secure components or ensure optimal pressure transfer, we can always provide you with the ideal solution.
Grub screws
The norelem range has various types of grub screw. The following section discusses three special variants.
DIN 551 grub screws
DIN 551 grub screws are mechanical components used as precise connecting elements in drive technology. In effect, they are simply a spindle with a standard thread profile and are used to transfer forces or movements.
DIN 551 defines specific requirements for the thread profile, tolerances and surface finish.
DIN 551 grub screws are made of grade 5.8 steel and are left bright.
For a reliable joint between the grub screw and counterpart, it is recommended that they be secured by gluing instead of pinning..
The LOCTITE® products are especially suitable for this. They ensure a firm and durable fastening.
DIN EN ISO 4026 grub screws with hex socket and flat point
DIN EN ISO 4026 grub screws with hex socket and flat point are precise connecting elements that are characterised by their ease of fitting and a slightly rounded flat tip.
The standard specifies requirements for dimensions, material properties and versions. This ensures a high level of functionality and universal interchangeability.
The flat point ensures precise force transmission, is gentle to sensitive surfaces and enables precise positioning. These grub screws are particularly suitable for applications that require a gentle fastening with high stability.
DIN EN ISO 4026 grub screws are made of steel or stainless steel (A2). They are available in two versions, with or without thread lock. Nylon is used for the thread lock.
DIN EN ISO 4027 grub screw with hex socket and pointed end
DIN EN ISO 4027 grub screw with hex socket and pointed end are connecting elements that are used for secure and firm connections in various applications.
The standard defines precise requirements for the shape, dimensions and materials of the screws to ensure uniform quality and interchangeability. A characteristic feature is the pointed conical tip. This interlocks with the counterpart, thus ensuring a non-slip and stable connection.
These grub screws are made of steel or A2 stainless steel. The steel version is grade 45 H and black, while the A2-70 stainless steel variant is bright.
The sizes M4x5, M5x5, M5x6, M6x6, M8x8 and M10x10 have a 120° point angle, which enables reliable fixation.
The DIN EN ISO 4027 standard ensures that the grub screws can be used universally and are compatible with other standard components.
Thrust spindles and thrust pads
Thrust spindles and thrust pads are used in clamping and fastening technology. They are used to secure workpieces or to transfer specific forces.
A thrust spindle is a threaded rod that exerts pressure on a workpiece through rotation. This threaded rod has a star grip at one end. The star grip is made from robust thermoplastic and ensures ergonomic operation. The black oxidised grub screw is made from grade 5.8 steel.
The thrust pad which comes with our thrust spindles is made of durable plastic (PA 6) and is supplied in black. It can be simply pressed onto the threaded spindle.
A thrust pad is used as a contact surface or buffer to distribute the force evenly and to avoid damaging the workpiece. The norelem range has three different types of thrust pad:
Swivel feet
A swivel foot is a versatile component used primarily in mechanics and the construction industry. This is an element with a movable, joint-like connection. This compensates for unevenness or angular deviations between different components.
The swivel foot ensures stability and flexibility by distributing loads evenly and enabling movements that would not be possible with rigid connections.
The swivel feet are made of different materials and components depending on the type.
Types A and G combine a thrust pad made from Q&T steel with a ball element made from free-cutting steel. Whereby Form G also comes with an anti-slip plate made of thermoplastic elastomer. This anti-slip plate absorbs vibrations and prevents the swivel foot slipping
With Form B, the thrust plate is made from stainless steel, whereas with Form C and D, it is made from POM. The ball element is made from free-cutting steel with Form C and stainless steel with Form D.
The surface treatments also vary. The ball elements of Forms A, G and C are case-hardened and black oxidised, while those of Forms B and D are bright.
Maximum stability and hold with norelem grub screws
Grub screws offer myriad benefits, that make them indispensable fasteners in numerous industrial applications. The headless design enables a discreet, flush fastening. This makes them particularly suitable for applications where no protruding screw head is desired.
Thanks to their space-saving design they are ideal for use in confined or difficult-to-reach areas, without compromising functionality. Grub screws impress with their high retaining force and the ability to create stable connections, which makes them particularly suitable for motion-securing applications.
Another advantage is the flexible screw-in depth which enables precise positioning.
The variety of end types such as a point, flat point or flat tip, significantly expands their application range. This diversity allows for optimal customisation to different requirements. The grub screw with hex socket and pointed end is ideal for e.g. positive fit connections..
For special applications there is also the studs with screw-in stop. These offer more flexibility.
The use of high quality materials such as stainless steel and steel make grub screws from norelem corrosion resistant and durable, even in extreme or aggressive environments.
Another plus-point is the reusability, that not only saves costs but also contributes to sustainability.
Their temperature resistance makes grub screws also suitable for use in extreme environmental conditions.
The availability of a wide range of thread sizes, from M3 to M20, also makes these standard parts cost-efficient.
